Steiff Bears: Margarete Steiff

Steiff Bears: Margarete Steiff

Margarete Steiff, founder of Steiff Bears, started her company in 1880. She beat all odds at the time by building a successful business, as she was confined to a wheelchair as a result of polio. Despite her handicap, she ultimately molded one of the most successful (and enduring) high-quality toy companies in the world. After 129 years in business, Steiff Bears continues to thrive and its products are in as much demand by collectors as they have ever been. Steiff's plush animals are all designed by hand in this German factory, and also handmade in their same traditional manner, which results in the highest quality teddy bears and plush animals. There are, on average, at least 30 operations involved in the production process of every Steiff plush animal. Each Steiff plush animal is designed and hand-made in Giengen, Germany.

The Steiff Bears "Button in Ear" trademark truly distinguishes each and every teddybear and plush animal as a symbol of ultimate quality for toys. The Steiff "Button In Ear" trademark was invented in 1904 by Franz Steiff, one of Margarete's nephews, to distinguish Steiff bears from all others. Since 1904, each and every piece that Steiff Bears has produced has the Steiff trademark button attached to its left ear. What further distinguishes Steiff's "Classic" teddy bears is that they are made of the finest mohair. Mohair is produced from the fur of the Angora goat, which has an incredibly soft texture and beautiful velvety finish.

It is a well-known fact that Steiff Teddy Bears are true heirloom pieces, and increase in value as they gracefully age. They continue to fetch top prices among collectors and Steiff Bear lovers, and make headlines quite often for the large sums of money that are paid for them at auctions.
