2020 Charlie Bears: 'The Wind In The Willows" Background

Wind In the Willows, by Kenneth Grahame
The Wind in the Willows Background
'The Wind in the Willows' is a novel written by Scottish novelist Kenneth Grahame and was written in 1905 and published in 1908. Both children and adults alike enjoy this novel as they will uncover wisdom, humor, and deep-seated meaning throughout this book. Incidentally, President Theodore Roosevelt wrote to Grahame in 1909 to let him know that he had 'read it and reread it, and have come to accept the characters as old friends'.

According to Wikipedia, 'This novel focuses on four anthropomorphised (human traits) animals: Mole, Rat (a European water vole), Toad, and Badger. They live in a pastoral version of Edwardian England. The book is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality and camaraderie, and celebrated for its evocation of the nature of the Thames Valley. (The thames Valley is a sub-region of South East England, centered on the Thames River west of London, with Oxford as its major city).

This novel has been adapted to both the screen and stage since its official inception back in 1908.

For 2020, Charlie Bears has created their version of this book's well-loved characters: Toad, Mole, Ratty and Badger. Each wears excellently tailored clothing which mimics the clothing worn during the era back in 1905.
